Dance in
Indonesia reflects the country's diversity of ethnicities and cultures.
Indonesian dances can be divided into two types; traditional dance and
contemporary dance.
Traditional
dance of Indonesia reflect the rich diversity of Indonesian people. The dance
traditions in Indonesia; such as Balinese, Javanese, Sundanese, Minangkabau,
Palembang, Aceh and many other
Indonesian
contemporary dance borrows influences from abroad, such as western ballet and
modern dance
Saman
Saman the
most popular dance in Aceh and the dance that has become well-known abroad with
the name “Thousand hands”. It’s an energetic, dynamic and require excellent
coordination among its players. The
movements are intense and powerful because, those movements also formed the
rhythm for the dance. Because beside the
sound of claps, chest slapping or hand hitting the floor there’s only one
person reading a narrative in Acehnese tone. Eleven to twenty one performers
kneel in a row on the floor and make different kinds of torso movements
accompanied by songs, clapping hands, slapping chests, slapping hands on the
floor, etc. The songs usually are praises to Allah or prayers or part of
Islamic teachings.
Pendet
Balinese
dances are a very ancient dance tradition that is a part of the religious and
artistic expression among the Balinese people. Pendet is a traditional dance
from Bali, in which offerings are made to purify the temple or theater as a
prelude to ceremonies or other dances. Pendet is typically performed by young girls,
carrying bowls of flower petals, handfuls of which are cast into the air at
various times in the dance.The original Pendet dance is performed by 4-5 young
girls before their puberty in temple yards.
